Kim's Origin Story Let's rewind a bit. Before Isaac and I (Kim) became that couple you see living their best lives traveling to all the National Parks, hiking to the top of…

What Insurance Works Best for People
Constantly Moving Between Countries?

When Kim and I traveled through Europe, we were not just “going to France.” We were moving through France, Monaco, Italy, and Switzerland in one trip. Different countries, languages, medical systems, and paperwork. The kind of trip that sounds romantic when you are planning it and suddenly feels very real when something goes wrong.

And something did go wrong.

While we were in Switzerland, Kim started having severe tooth pain. We soon found out that she needed an emergency root canal!

That was the moment we were beyond grateful that we decided to get travel medical insurance for this trip.

Before that trip, we had purchased SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance Essential, which is travel medical insurance, not traditional travel insurance or domestic health insurance. When we signed up, we were able to choose the countries we planned to visit.

When you are constantly moving between countries, you do not just need coverage. You need flexibility, clear documentation, and someone who can help you understand what to do when you are stressed, in pain, and standing in the wild jungle of international paperwork.

We partnered with SafetyWing on this article to share our experience using their travel medical insurance while traveling through multiple countries. As always, we believe you should read the policy details carefully and choose the coverage that fits your specific trip, health needs, and travel style.

Quick Answer: What Type of Insurance Works Best for Multi-Country Travelers?

For people constantly moving between countries, the best fit is usually flexible travel medical insurance for multiple countries that:

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Allows you to select or update the countries you are visiting

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Can provide proof of travel medical insurance

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Can be purchased before or during your travels

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Offers support when you need help understanding claim documentation

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Works for anyone traveling more than 5 days and wanting both travel and medical emergency coverage

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Has clear limitations, exclusions, and claim requirements

In our opinion, SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance Essential can be a strong fit for this type of travel, especially if you are looking for affordable travel medical insurance that can follow you across multiple countries.

SafetyWing describes Nomad Insurance Essential as a global travel medical insurance product, and its current materials say travelers can buy while abroad and stay covered across 180+ countries, with U.S. coverage available as an extra.

Why Multi-Country Travel Makes Insurance More Complicated?

When you take a normal vacation to one place, insurance is usually simple. You know where you are going, when you are leaving, when you are coming home, and what country you will be in if something happens.

But full-time travelers and digital nomads do not always travel that way.

You may spend two weeks in France, a weekend in Monaco, a month in Italy, and then cross into Switzerland because the mountains started whispering your name like some alpine David Attenborough documentary which you couldn’t possibly turn down!

That kind of travel is beautiful. It is also more complex.

You are dealing with:

Sticker Nisuitcase

Different countries

Sticker Nisuitcase

Different medical systems

Sticker Nisuitcase

Different emergency numbers

Sticker Nisuitcase
Different appointment processes
Sticker Nisuitcase

Different languages

Sticker Nisuitcase

Different documentation standards

Sticker Nisuitcase

Different visa or entry requirements

Sticker Nisuitcase

Different ideas of what paperwork should look like

That is why travel medical insurance for multiple countries needs to be more than a policy buried in your inbox. It needs to be a practical system you understand before you need it.

Freedom is wonderful. But freedom without systems can become chaos wearing a backpack.

What We Look For in Travel Medical Insurance for Multiple Countries

After traveling full time, building our life around remote work, and learning a few lessons the hard way, these are the things we now look for when comparing insurance for people constantly moving between countries.

1. Can You Use It Across Multiple Countries?

This is the obvious one, but it is also the most important.

If your itinerary includes multiple countries, your travel medical insurance needs to match the way you actually travel. Not the imaginary version of your trip where you stay in one place and never change plans.

For our Europe trip, we were able to select the countries we planned to visit when purchasing SafetyWing, including France, Monaco, Italy, and Switzerland.

That gave us peace of mind because our trip was not built around one destination. It was built around movement.

What Insurance Works Best For People Constantly Moving Between

2. Can You Get Proof of Travel Medical Insurance?

This was one of the most useful parts of our experience.

SafetyWing provided documentation showing that we had travel medical insurance for the countries we selected. That kind of certification can matter when you want proof of coverage available for travel planning, border questions, visa applications, or simply your own peace of mind.

Important note: do not assume any insurance documentation automatically satisfies every country’s entry or visa requirements. Always check the current requirements for each country you plan to visit.

But from a practical traveler’s standpoint, having documentation available is valuable. It is one less thing to scramble for later. Kim always kept her Safetywing travel medical insurance card in her purse.

3. Can You Buy It While Already Abroad?

Many travelers do not plan perfectly. Shocking, I know. Somewhere, a spreadsheet just fainted!

Sometimes you leave the country and realize you forgot to buy coverage. Sometimes your original plan expires. Sometimes your trip extends. Sometimes you go from “two weeks in Europe” to “what if we just keep going?”

That is why flexibility matters so much for people constantly moving between countries.

One of SafetyWing’s helpful features is that you can sign up before you depart or while already abroad, according to SafetyWing’s current plan materials. SafetyWing also describes Nomad Insurance Essential as working like a subscription, with the option to auto-extend every 28 days, and coverage available for up to 364 days at a time.

For full-time travelers, digital nomads, and slow travelers, that can be extremely useful. You may think your trip is ending in Switzerland, and then suddenly you find a great deal in Italy, or a housesit opportunity in France. When your travel plans change, it is helpful to have travel medical insurance that can potentially extend with you instead of forcing you to start from scratch every time your itinerary evolves.

This makes SafetyWing worth comparing if you are searching for travel medical insurance that I can buy while abroad, travel medical insurance for multiple countries, or travel medical insurance that can continue when your trip gets longer than expected.

4. Is It Affordable for Younger Travelers?

One thing that stood out to us about SafetyWing was the pricing.

The Essential plan starts around $2/day, which feels much more approachable than many insurance products we have seen in the U.S. SafetyWing’s FAQ currently lists pricing for ages 10–39 at $62.72 per 4 weeks, which works out to roughly that daily range.

As someone used to the American insurance system, I appreciated seeing a travel medical insurance option that felt accessible for younger travelers and digital nomads. In the U.S., insurance premiums can often feel disconnected from how much care you personally use. With SafetyWing, the pricing felt more aligned with the needs of younger, mobile travelers who want protection without feeling like they need to sell a kidney to protect a tooth.

And speaking of teeth…

Our Real Claim Experience in Switzerland

This is where SafetyWing became more than a theory for us.

While we were in Switzerland, Kim developed severe tooth pain. We contacted SafetyWing before going to the dentist, which turned out to be one of the smartest things we could have done.

The person we chatted with was quick, friendly, sympathetic, and very clear in what Kim needed to do. Kim was in extreme pain, and the representative did not make us feel like we were bothering them. More importantly, they explained exactly what we needed to do for the claim to be eligible.

That mattered because, like all insurance companies, SafetyWing needs the correct documentation before they can pay out a claim. SafetyWing legitimately made Kim feel like they wanted us to be able to use their services! We were blown away by the amazing customer service.

The representative explained that we needed to schedule Kim’s appointment within the required timeframe after calling them. In our case, we understood that we needed to schedule the appointment within 48 hours. They also explained that the dentist needed to document the situation as a dental emergency, which it was. Kim ended up needing an emergency root canal.

Because we had that information before going into the appointment, we knew what documentation to ask for. We were not guessing. We were not trying to reverse-engineer the claim afterward. SafetyWing made it very clear what we needed to do.

That is a huge lesson for anyone traveling internationally:

If something goes wrong, contact your travel medical insurance provider before receiving care whenever possible.

Do not assume you know what documents they need. Do not assume the clinic or dentist will automatically write the paperwork correctly. Kim’s Swiss dentist wouldn’t have written ‘emergency’ on the paperwork. Kim had to review the paperwork then ask them again to write ‘emergency’ on the paperwork using her Google Translator).

Ask first. Get the requirements. Then go into the appointment prepared.

In our case, because SafetyWing clearly explained what Kim needed, we were able to collect the right documentation and receive the full claim amount we were eligible for.

You can see exactly what’s included with SafetyWing here.

Why Language Support Matters When You’re Moving Between Countries

Here is another thing people do not think about until they are in it:

Medical paperwork abroad may not be in English.

In Switzerland, our dentist provided documentation in German. That could have been a major obstacle if the insurance provider required everything to be translated before reviewing the claim.

But SafetyWing had support available for different languages, and they were able to work with the German documentation from the Swiss dentist.

That was a bigger deal than it might sound.

GOLDEN NUGGET TIP

Even if you don’t speak the language of the country where you’re getting medical treatment, always use your translator on your phone to make sure you have the proper documentation SafetyWing requires. Like Kim, she reviewed the documents, saw they didn’t write ‘emergency’ next to ‘root canal’ and kindly asked them to rewrite the documents for her.

When you are traveling through multiple countries, you may be dealing with French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai, Japanese, or any number of languages depending on where you go. You do not want to become a translator, claims specialist, medical coordinator, and stressed-out travel raccoon all at the same time.

For people searching for travel health insurance that covers multi countries, this is one of the practical details to think about. And to be precise, Nomad Insurance Essential is travel medical insurance, but the broader search intent is clear: people want coverage that works when they are moving across borders.

Multi-Country Travel Medical Insurance Comparison Checklist

Here is the checklist we would use when comparing travel medical insurance options for constantly moving between countries.

What to Compare Why It Matters for Multi-Country Travelers How SafetyWing Fit Our Needs
Multi-country coverage Your trip may include several countries, not one destination. We used it while traveling through France, Monaco, Italy, and Switzerland.
Proof of coverage You may need documentation for peace of mind, visa research, or travel logistics. SafetyWing provided documentation showing travel medical insurance for selected countries.
Buy while abroad Long-term travelers often extend trips or forget to buy before leaving. SafetyWing says you can sign up before departure or while already abroad.
Claim support You need to know what documentation is required before receiving care. Their representative clearly explained what Kim needed for her emergency dental claim.
Language flexibility Medical documents may be written in the local language. Our Swiss dentist documented in German, and SafetyWing could still work with it.
Price Younger travelers and nomads need something affordable. Essential Plan starts around $2/day for travelers like us!
Add-ons Some travelers need electronics or adventure sports coverage. Check available add-ons based on your trip and risk level.
Limitations Every insurance product has exclusions. Read the policy before buying and before receiving care.

What SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Essential Does Not Cover

This section is important because no insurance product covers everything.

In our opinion, trust comes from understanding both the benefits and the limitations.

SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance Essential is travel medical insurance. It is not a complete replacement for every type of domestic health insurance, and it is not designed to cover every possible situation.

Based on SafetyWing’s current policy information, Nomad Insurance Essential is designed for unforeseen eligible medical situations while traveling. You should carefully review the official policy for details, limitations, and exclusions before purchasing.

Things to check carefully include:

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Pre-existing condition limitations

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Routine or preventive care limitations

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Dental coverage limits

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Whether maternity care is included or excluded

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Cancer treatment exclusions or limitations

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Coverage in your home country

Sticker Feather Bluewood

U.S. coverage, which may require an extra option

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Electronics theft coverage, which may require an add-on

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Adventure sports coverage, which may require an add-on

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Deductibles, limits, and claim documentation requirements

This is also where travelers should think through their own risk profile.

If you are carrying expensive camera gear, laptops, or podcast equipment, look into whether you need an electronics add-on. Many people search for travel insurance that covers electronics theft, but the important step is reading the exact terms of the plan or add-on before assuming your gear is covered.

If you are skiing, climbing, diving, canyoning, or doing adventure activities, check whether you need an adventure sports add-on.

If you are going home during your travels, check the rules around travel insurance with coverage at home or home-country coverage. SafetyWing’s materials note that U.S. coverage is extra, so this is something to confirm before buying if the U.S. is part of your itinerary.

Coverage details, limits, exclusions, and add-ons can change, so always review the current policy wording directly before purchasing or receiving care.

What Insurance Works Best For People Constantly Moving Between

Who SafetyWing May Be a Good Fit For

In our opinion, SafetyWing may be a good fit for travelers like us who want flexible travel medical insurance for multiple countries.

It may be especially useful for:

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Digital nomads

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Full-time travelers

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Remote workers

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Slow travelers

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Long-term international travelers

Sticker Feather Bluewood

People traveling without a fixed home base

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Younger travelers looking for affordable coverage

Sticker Feather Bluewood

People who may need to buy travel medical insurance while already abroad

Sticker Feather Bluewood

Travelers moving between countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, or other multi-country regions

For us, it fit the way we were traveling because we hardly ever take a single vacation. We love living a full-time travel lifestyle built around moving from place to place.

Who The SafetyWing Essential Plan May Not Be the Right Fit For

SafetyWing may not be the right fit for every traveler.

You may want to compare other options if:

Sticker Feather Bluewood

You need routine or preventative care

Sticker Feather Bluewood

You have significant pre-existing conditions

Sticker Feather Bluewood

You need full coverage at home

Sticker Feather Bluewood

You need maternity or cancer care

Sticker Feather Bluewood

You need very high dental coverage

Sticker Feather Bluewood

You are doing high-risk adventure sports without checking add-ons

Sticker Feather Bluewood

You need a specific policy to satisfy a visa requirement and have not confirmed it qualifies

Sticker Feather Bluewood

You want broader trip protection

Routine care, domestic insurance and more comprehensive travel coverage are included in the Complete plan. Pre-existing conditions are still excluded under both plans.

This is why I do not think travelers should blindly buy any insurance product. Read the policy. Understand the claim process. Know what documents you need. Ask questions before you need help. That is not the exciting part of travel, but it is one of the systems that allows the exciting part to happen.

What Insurance Works Best For People Constantly Moving Between

The Biggest Lesson From Our Switzerland Claim

The biggest lesson from our claim experience was not simply “buy travel medical insurance.”

The bigger lesson was:

When something goes wrong abroad, the quality of communication matters almost as much as the coverage itself.

Kim was in serious pain. We were in Switzerland. The dentist’s documentation was in German. We needed to understand the rules before the appointment. And SafetyWing’s representative clearly explained what needed to happen. Even more than that, Safetywing’s customer service representative expressed empathy and care about Kim’s situation.

That clarity turned a stressful experience into a manageable process.

That is exactly what good systems do.

They do not remove all risk. They reduce chaos when risk shows up at the door wearing hiking boots.

Final Thoughts: What Insurance Works Best for People Constantly Moving Between Countries?

For people constantly moving between countries, the best insurance for your needs is usually not the most complicated plan. It is the plan that matches the way you actually travel.

For us, that meant looking for travel medical insurance that was:

  • Flexible across multiple countries
  • Affordable
  • Easy to purchase
  • Able to provide proof of coverage
  • Helpful during a real claim
  • Clear about documentation requirements
  • Practical for digital nomads and long-term travelers

SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance Essential fit our needs during our incredible 3 month trip through France, Monaco, Italy, and Switzerland. We especially appreciated the affordability, the ability to choose the countries we were visiting, the documentation showing coverage, and the support we received when Kim needed emergency dental care in Switzerland.

It is not perfect, and it does not cover everything. No insurance product does.

But for our style of travel, SafetyWing gave us a practical system for handling one of the least glamorous parts of international travel: what happens when something goes wrong.
