Capitol Reef National Park is often considered one of the hidden gems of Utah. If there’s one thing you absolutely cannot miss when visiting Capitol Reef, it’s the pies from the Gifford Homestead. Located in the Fruita section of the park, the Gifford Homestead sells what many visitors claim to be the best pies in America. Made from fruits grown right in the historical orchards, these pies come in various flavors including apple, peach, and mixed berry.

Not only are these pies a delightful treat after a day of exploring, but they also offer a taste of the pioneer history embedded in the park. I can personally vouch for the deliciousness of these pies—on one occasion, we were so enamored with them that we went back to get more after finishing our first one.

Another must-do is the Scenic Drive that runs through the park. You get to pass through incredibly picturesque areas, including a drive-through slot canyon, which is one of the few you can navigate by vehicle. It’s the only slot canyon we’ve driven through, making it a unique experience for any road trip enthusiast. Alongside this, there are plenty of pull-outs where you can park and explore the surrounding areas.

Capitol Reef offers fantastic camping opportunities. There are campgrounds managed by the National Park Service, and they tend to be less crowded compared to other Utah parks. If you prefer some creature comforts, nearby accommodations provide options ranging from rustic to luxurious.
