5-Day Arizona Road Trip:
The Best Grand Canyon Itinerary from Phoenix

Embark on the Ultimate 5-Day Grand Canyon Roadtrip Loop from Phoenix

If you’re looking for the best Grand Canyon roadtrip, this 5-day loop from Phoenix is one of the most scenic, efficient, and soul-fueling trips you can take.

You’ll hit two epic National Parks, two of the most breathtaking drives in Arizona, and avoid backtracking. Whether you’re visiting the Grand Canyon for the first time or just want an optimized adventure, this trip checks every box.

Perfect for weekend warriors, part-time vanlifers, or anyone needing a quick reset in nature.

Day 1 – Phoenix → Sedona → Flagstaff

Start your road trip out of Phoenix heading north to Sedona (about 2 hours). No exaggeration — this is a world-class destination. Red rock hikes, high-vibe energy, and views that make you remember why you love being alive.

Hit a short hike like:

  • Cathedral Rock

  • Fay Canyon

  • Airport Mesa (killer sunset)

From Sedona, take the scenic 89A up through Oak Creek Canyon — one of the best drives in the Southwest — and finish the day in Flagstaff. Cool temps, tall pines, chill town. Stay the night.

Day 2 – Day Trip to the Grand Canyon

Today’s the big one: a full day visiting the Grand Canyon.

From Flagstaff, it’s about 90 minutes to the South Rim. This is the iconic spot most people picture — and for good reason. It’s massive, humbling, and unforgettable.

Spend the day hitting easy-access viewpoints:

  • Mather Point

  • Yavapai Point

  • Hermit’s Rest

  • Walk the Rim Trail

You don’t need to hike deep to feel it. Just being there is enough.

After sunset (or earlier), drive back to Flagstaff and sleep like a rock.

Day 3 – Petrified Forest National Park

This one’s the hidden gem. Head east about 2 hours to Petrified Forest National Park — wildly underrated and totally worth it.

It’s like walking on Mars, with ancient fossilized trees and painted desert vibes.

The Crystalized Trees really blew us away!  It’s unlike anything we’ve seen before! Do note that this park closes its gates at 5pm.

Don’t miss:

  • Blue Mesa Trail (Kim’s fav)

  • Crystal Forest (my fav)

  • Painted Desert Overlook

You can do the park in a few hours, or spend the day and really take it in. Overnight in Holbrook or Winslow — both classic Route 66 towns.

Day 4 – The Scenic Drive Back: Route 191 + 70 + 60

This might be the most fun drive of the whole trip.

Take AZ Route 191 — aka the curviest road in Arizona. It’s well-paved and winds through forested mountain passes. Connect to Highway 70 and then onto Route 60, back into Phoenix.

You’ll pass mining towns, canyons, and amazing mountain views.  This is such a unique road you will always remember this drive.  Remember to fill up on gas before you get onto the 191 and pack extra snacks and water as there are not many places to stop on the way.

Day 4 – The Scenic Drive Back: Route 191 + 70 + 60

Day 5 – Buffer Day in PHX or Bonus Road Trip Exploring Time

We left a buffer day in as you could spend an extra day in any of these locations.  Sedona has so much to explore!

Check out the things to do in Sedona section of our website to learn all the amazing things to explore in Sedona!

Flagstaff also has a lot of cool things to explore like Sunset Crater National Monument and Walnut Creek.

You can also stay at a lodge in the Grand Canyon so it makes it easier to see the sunrise and sunset.

So many options and you have this day to take them!

Why This Trip Works

This loop is optimized for awesomeness. The drives almost every day will be amazing. The sites are awesome and you will see so many different landscapes!

  • 2 National Parks
  • 2 jaw-dropping scenic drives
  • Affordable + easy to customize

This is one of the best Grand Canyon itineraries for people who want something meaningful, but efficient and different from your standard out and back.
